Hi my name is Brendan Mangnitz, I have been in the Nuisance Wildlife Removal industry now for nearly 6 years since I graduated from College at UF with a background in Entomology and Wildlife Biology. I have seen and controlled just about any wildlife issue you may think of. I have dealt with possums in apartments complex, possum removal from your everyday house hold, possums in the Attic, possums digging up yards, possums in Pools, possums stuck in Chimney’s, and the list goes on and on. I have used several different control and removal methods for possums and that’s what I want to share with you guys on our website here at Animal-Pros.com.
This article about how to remove possums from your home, attic or property and we will go over the noises that possums generally make. Many of my customers, clients and even technicians frequently ask me what type of noises and sounds do possums make? Although this isn't generally good idea to diagnose without a professional animal inspection, you can look at my other page on possum feces and urine. Identifying possum feces is a better telltale sign for possum existence, but possums do make noises that can be helpful in identification of possums in the attic, possums on your lawn or even possums inside your home.
First let's start off with the sounds that possums make in the attic. Possums are larger mammals and generally weigh in between 10 to 15 pounds, so when they walk on your roof you can actually hear them through the shingles. It will sound like there's something running around the roof. If the possum opens up the soffits or gets into your attic you will still be able to hear the possum rummaging through the insulation. Possums can be sneaky and quiet if they want to be, so you may not hear them at first. Once they become comfortable in your attic and feel safe, you will be able to hear them running around. If you can hear possums pulling up the insulation it will sound like there is an animal in the attic. Possums can remove insulation and you can also hear possum sounds through your drywall. The sounds a possum makes will sound like loud scratching. Possums will stomp on the drywall. Honestly I tell my customers if it sounds like there's a party upstairs, you might actually have possums in the attic. Possums tend to be quite loud, unlike rodents or animals that are small enough to run around silently.
One sound you may hear possums make in the attic is the mother possum calling for her babies. When the mother possum leaves the attic, her babies will become afraid and these possum babies will make a chirping sound very similar to high-pitched birds. This possum chirping and possum noise in the attic is a calling of the baby possum to its mother possum; it means that the possum babies are hungry in the attic, the possum babies are scared or even that the possum babies might be in danger. If you enter an attic and you think you have possums from sounds of the baby possums calling for the mother you hear, you need to leave the attic immediately.
You can hear possums sounds at all hours of the day, although possums are generally nocturnal. If possums have babies in the attic, those possum babies can make noises during the day when the mother possum leaves to get food or if there are issues with the baby possums. The mother possum can also make calling sounds during the day for help; that is why customers sometimes call me and say they hear noises at night or they think that they might have an issue with possums but they're hearing the noises during the day. Possums can be a nuisance 24/7 when you deal with wildlife.
Although it is more common to hear possum noises at night, do not on rule that you might have possums in the attic if you hear the sounds during the day.
